Why reading is important

My daughter is going to enter 5th grade this September, and I’m afraid she might be a little behind on her math and reading skills. Can anyone use experience to sort-of fill me in on what her reading and mathematics levels should be?

Are the tests hard or easy? And on the paper requiring summer reading it says it is suggested to take notes and do a reader’s journal. I didn’t because I am not a note person or anything but do I have to? It also says I willl be tested during the first two weeks of school.

My son is reading pretty well and could go to the next book level but not till his comprehension improves. His teacher says he is still doing great but this needs work. She has given me a list of questions to ask him after we read a book, which he doesn’t like very well, so Im trying to just get him to talk about the book. I want him to like learning. He loves to read and loves me to read to him. Any other suggestions to help with reading comprehension?

I am not sure how to word this properly!
When I read,I visualise ‘being’ there-Like a fly on the wall.It just happens when I start reading.
Do you do this or something else?Like imagine you are the main character?

I want to (in fact, need to) increase my reading speed of literary work such as the novels of Jane Austen. Is there a method to do so wherein you read every word, and absorb both the stylistic elements and ‘informational’ ones other than using common sense like finding a quiet place to read, decrease distractions, and the like. I know how standard speed reading programs work, but the appear to be oriented to the quicker processing and amassing of information–which is a different type of reading of a different form of writing.

I read pretty slowly, but I’m able to retain a lot of the information that I read. Now, when I try to read quickly, I skip things, forget things, and have to go back to the material that I read before. I need help with this.
Also, how can I learn to focus more on reading, so that I can be able to read an entire book in one sitting, without feeling the need to get up and do something else?
How can I become a faster reader without having to skip important facts while reading?

it shows 8 as red and 14 in the middle and 18 on the high side red. right now it shows around 12 and I know reading that on a voltmeter is low but I wasn’t sure if it was the same reading.

Have you ever stopped reading a book halfway through because you just couldn’t stand to read it anymore? Or did you read to the end thinking that it might get better? Did you read anything from the same author before this hated book? Did you read anything by this same author after the hated book?

I am working on a website about a complicated medical issue for the general public. Are there any easy ways to check the reading level of my website and to make it easier to read if necessary?

I am a student and read a _lot_, but reading in any position – sitting, reclining, in bed, in a chair, everywhere – usually gives me awful neck pain. I think someone should invent a book stand or suspended book holder to preserve people’s neck muscles. Suggestions?
