Do You Stop Reading Books If You Start Hating Them?

Have you ever stopped reading a book halfway through because you just couldn’t stand to read it anymore? Or did you read to the end thinking that it might get better? Did you read anything from the same author before this hated book? Did you read anything by this same author after the hated book?

I have stuck with one book that I disliked and it didn’t end well either. Mostly I just put the book down and go on to something else that I might like better.
I would read another book by an author after that, but if it was their style that I disliked then I probably wouldn’t read them again.

I do both. I try not to put a book down after I start reading it for the chance that it may get better, but occasionally the book is so boring that I have to stop reading. Yes, I have read books by the same other and loved some and hated others. I did continue to read books by the author, just to see if any of the others books were good.
Natalie, I read the Luxe series, and it is really good. I think you should give it another chance. They get pretty good.

I took me six months to read Paint it Black by Janet Fitch, usually I can burn through a book in a couple days. The book wasn’t boring or poorly written, it was incredibly depressing. I would read a few chapters, become extremely bummed, read something else, and once again try to finish Paint it Black. I also read White Oleander by Janet Fitch and came across the same problem. Her books are like car accidents, beautifully written car accidents; full of carnage and suffering, you know you shouldn’t read them but you do anyway.

Yes, I’ve actually read Twilight and New Moon, which isn’t worth a second read. However, I got through them with ease. The other two books after New Moon are another matter. The third book, I forgot the title, was a great struggle. I put it down many times just to cringe and didn’t pick it back up until a week or so later. The fourth book, all I can say is wow. What was she thinking? I skipped and skimmed through the whole book. Never again though. I don’t think I’ll ever read another Stephenie Meyer book. Also I have read a book from an author that I liked, them I turned and read another one of her books, which I didn’t enjoy so much.

I read so much that I am always looking for new authors. I often read a book mostly to find out if I like the writer and the style of the writing. If I find I hate it, yes, I quit reading the book and the novelist doesn’t make it into my future buy plans. Sometimes a tried and true author has let me down. I may force myself to go ahead and read the book, especially if it is a part of a series. If it is a stand alone story or the start of a new series, I will usually write it off. I wouldn’t buy any more of the series. If a series I am reading goes south, I would eventually quit reading it.
Oh, how I hate it when they kill main characters!!!

I once read a book that was supposed to be a light, easy, breezy, almost trashy read and it turned out to be about archeology half the time and the other half was taken up by a whinny little brat. It was so boring and terribly written (which, normally, I wouldn’t mind if it was at least entertaining) that I nearly just threw it out the window, but I managed to finish it… just….

Well, I read a book called “the Luxe” which was really good, and its sort of like gossip girl but in 1899. Then i started reading the sequal but i really didn’t like it and the characters started getting boring so i stopped. I would still read the first one again though.

If I’m not into the book by the first 30 pages I give up. One time I used to keep reading to see if the book improved but not now. There are too many good books to waste my time on something uninteresting.
I never read anything by that author again.

I used to keep reading but now i normally check out 4-5 books if I am reading books by authors who are unfamiliar to me.
When one doesn’t pan out by page 40 or 50 i can just reach over and start another.
With 4 or 5 books one is usually good.
